OUR MISSION

Gateway Association

We are passionate about empowering families and people who live with disabilities to live fully authentic lives. We envision a community where all children grow within a family; all children learn together in neighbourhood schools; all adults work at real jobs in the community; all adults have real homes and real friends; and all people are valued, contributing members of their communities.

VISION

Gateway envisions a world where all people are valued, respected members of their communities.

MISSION

Gateway will be a global leader and influencer in community development that looks to our roots and expertise to break barriers for people with disabilities.

PURPOSE

Transformation of community through the lens of disability.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sahana Parameswara

Message from Executive Director:

Dear Community members,

On my decolonizing journey, I pledge to understand and end systemic racism and, commit to advancing reconciliation. #LandBack will remain my guiding principle as I continue to engage predominantly in Amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Treaty 6) and Moh’kins’tsis (Treaty 7) territories. Land acknowledgement as I have come realize in the last year, requires cultural humility which is a life long process of self evaluation and self critique, requires us to recognize power dynamics, and take individual and institutional accountability (Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-Garcia). As it pertains to Gateway,

  • What is the individual and institutional commitment to land back?
  • How do we support community members that occupy various intersections?
  • What does equity within disability inclusion look like and how do we center that?
  • How do we build more equity within our work culture?

These questions and more found a home at Gateway in 2022 as we embarked on an Anti Racism and Organizational Change process. It has been a hard journey as is meant to be, even though the importance is undeniable. I admit that embodying cultural humility is a different journey than simply understanding it conceptually. It is difficult when living and working within systems where “knowing” is more valued than “questioning”. Tyson Yunkaporta offers “we used to fight to change conditions. Now we fight to change perception”. The deep work required of us is not limited to increasing our understanding but also asks us to follow it up with action. 2022 has been the start of an interesting and challenging personal journey for me and my colleagues as we commit to unlearning and learning to build a more equitable organizational culture and strengthen our allyship with the disability community. We continue this exploration into 2023.

The departments of Gateway – Family Resource Centre, Gateway to Equity Diversity Inclusion-Hub, Employment Resource Centre (Edmonton and Calgary) and Gateway to Digital Inclusion – have had another year of strengthening old partnerships and building new ones. I am grateful for the mentorship of the Gateway Board and look forward to the unveiling of the Board Portfolios throughout 2023. Thankful to elders, teachers, consultants and colleagues who have shaped my learning and remind me of all that is yet to be learnt. Ay-Hiy.

ALEX KIRKLAND

President’s Message

Board President

Alex Kirkland

My name is Alex Kirkland and I am proud to be the President of the Gateway Association Board of Directors. As this is a new role for me, there were some challenges of course, but I am learning my role and I’m hoping to lead Gateway into the best future that Gateway has had yet! I will not be doing this alone, as I have a great team to work with and I commit to you that we all have Gateway’s best interest at heart.

So, what am I looking forward to in 2023 and 2024 for Gateway Association? I would like to see Gateway Association continue with the hope and strength that the founding members of Gateway Association have given to us as a legacy. My hope is that we will continue to grow and move forward in new directions that will make the founding members of Gateway Association so very proud!

It is with sadness that I announce that Vickie Mancini has decided to leave our board. Vicky Mancini, who started her journey with Gateway many years ago, both as an employee and as a board member after her retirement. Vicki, I wish to thank you for all your hard work, all that you have done and the big impact you’ve had on Gateway Association. I know that this is not goodbye I know that you will be here in the future to help in any way you can!

Gateway’s other projects and goals will continue the journey of building a continuum of services that are value-driven and collaborative in nature.

The GEDI Hub, which started in 2022, is a one-of-a-kind employer resource centre where the consultants work collaboratively with employers and service providers to build their capacity to be approachable, inclusive and equitable to job seekers with disabilities who also occupy their intersections.

The Family Resource Centre works collaboratively with individuals and families from the disability community across the lifespan, as well as their support networks. The Employment Resource Centres are in both cities- Calgary and Edmonton, and where teams work collaboratively with job seekers to find a good employment matches.

The Gateway to Digital Literacy program is another one-of-a-kind program of using a collaborative approach to understand where individuals might be at with their digital skills and works to improve their knowledge as it pertains to digital literacy and digital citizenship.

Last but not least,  the Gateway App  Version 2.0 will be released in just a few months!

I would like to think all employees from both Calgary and Edmonton who have done such an amazing job at carrying out the Gateway vision. Without you, Gateway would not exist and I am so honored to be able to help govern such a diverse, inclusive, amazing, and dedicated team! I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the year ahead. I would also like to acknowledge Sahana Parameswara. I feel Sahana is a good leader, has a good heart and not only cares about Gateway Association, but cares about humanity as a whole! I look forward to working with Sahana over this next year to improve Gateway and help Gateway to be the best that Gateway Association can be!

I’d like to thank you all for joining us at our 2022 AGM. I hope that you have learned new things and shared stories of how Gateway Association has impacted your life!

Our program supports the betterment of people lives…. their relationships, financial stability and independence

Our employment team has developed numerous workshops to support participants through all phases of our employment process. The goal of these workshops is to build participant capacity so that everyone that successfully completes the program has the skills and knowledge to be successful independently in the future.

Community Partnerships

CMHA
During our monthly meetings, Gateway staff are able to ask questions that either specifically or more broadly target issues that we are seeing in the mental health of the individuals we support. The team can then move forward in a more informed approach that limits harm and facilitates growth.

NiGiNan Housing Ventures
A registered non-profit that works to address housing needs and requirements of indigenous people living in Edmonton. Through this partnership, we have been connected to a few different participants to join our employment program. However, because of the transient nature of people accessing NiGiNan services and our capacity to bring on more participants, we haven’t had a lasting opportunity to work with the folks utilizing their services.

Kibbi
To continue supporting those who need jobs, we have been using the Kibbi app and web browser frequently in the job searching phase of our program. Kibbi was introduced to Gateway through the CEO, who has worked hard to make this resource accessible for all that use it. It is a resource that is especially beneficial to the individuals we support who do not have driver’s licenses.

Among the fluctuating social and funding environments, our team is proud that we were able to continue to provide high quality one on one support for the people we are working with!

Gateway to Digital Inclusion Program and App

About GTDI Program and App

Gateway to Digital Inclusion (GTDI) is a Digital Literacy program for Alberta residents, age 18 and older, who self-identify as having a disability-based barrier. This program was designed to help people gain the basic digital skills to engage online and keep up with the changing digital world. Through a series of interactive online workshops, field trips, courses, and tutorials; participants can build online connections and network, create digital content, have a digital presence, and build employable digital skills. After intake, participants can sign up for any of the workshop they are interested in, repeat workshop if they choose, and access digital literacy tutoring sessions. Gateway to Digital Inclusion helps participants build the digital skills and confidence to work, play, and engage online in a way that is meaningful to them.

The Gateway to Digital Inclusion Mobile App is designed to assist any Albertan family in navigating life while supporting a loved one with a developmental disability. The app covers topics across the lifespan and is available to 24/7. This allows Gateway to join community members on their journey, wherever they are at. Workshops and programs are available to help develop digital literacy skills. Additionally, the APP aims to complement all the different programming being executed by various teams at Gateway. By organizing events and workshops on themes such as mental health, story sharing, art and expression, our team is working towards providing a more holistic experience.

Gateway to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Hub

About GEDI-Hub

The Inception:

With Alberta and Canadian workplaces currently experiencing workforce shortages, especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and with these shortages only projected to become larger in the next 10-15 years, Gateway Association was able to quickly identify an opportunity to formally and continue to support Alberta employers in becoming more inclusive. Utilizing proven workforce strategies such as equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and leaning into our existing 10+ years’ experience in supporting job seekers and employers informally through our employment program, plans for a provincial EDI resource centered were created.

The GEDI-Hub officially launced in February of 2022 and is Alberta’s first and only free workplace EDI resource centre. The GEDI-Hub offers customized consultations, free weekly workshops, and offers other resources located through the website. The team of Diversity and Engagement Consultants are located across the province and meets each workplace where they currently are in their EDI journey- whether starting from the beginning or finalizing an existing strategy!

The GEDI-Hub is a “one-stop-shop” in helping workplaces build their EDI capacity and knowledge. The GEDI-Hub is funded by the Government of Canada and its services will be offered at no cost to workplaces.

In addition to supporting workplaces, the GEDI-Hub will support the promotion of employment-focused service providers through a service provider directory and marketing activities. The GEDI-Hub also connects and introduces workplaces to a diverse talent pool of job seekers through a network of Alberta service providers. once launched, the Hub assists with all types of workplaces and organizations – ranging from small to enterprise-level and for and not for profit.
