The Experiential Regulation Tools Lab
The Experiential Regulation Tools Lab
Program Overview: Emotional Regulation for Sustainable Employment
Entering the workforce is a significant transition. For individuals with disabilities, this transition
often comes with unique challenges related to sensory processing, energy management, and
anxiety.
This workshop goes beyond standard “stress management.” It is an experiential, trauma-
informed lab designed to equip participants with a personalized “wellness bag of tricks” to
navigate workplace stressors, stay regulated during interviews, and maintain sustainable
employment.
Why This Matters for Your Audience
Many individuals with disabilities entering the workforce face unique barriers that standard
training overlooks, including:
• Heightened workplace and interview anxiety.
• Sensory overwhelm in new environments.
• Emotional regulation challenges under pressure.
• Fatigue and neurodivergent energy fluctuations.
Core Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Understand the basic physiology of how stress impacts their specific nervous system.• Learn accessible, practical tools for real-time emotional regulation.
• Develop personal strategies for calming themselves in professional settings (e.g., before
an interview or during a stressful shift).
• Build confidence in their ability to manage workplace stressors.
• Leave with tangible, self-created self-care tools.
Methodology: The Experiential Regulation Tools Lab
Crucially, the facilitation format is highly adaptive. We ensure participants with different
learning styles, neurodivergences, and physical limitations are guided in a unique manner that
honors their individual experiential journey.
The workshop rotates through these accessible practices:
1. Breathwork for Regulation (The Foundation)
We move beyond generic breathing exercises. This is a simplified, somatic-based class focused
on body awareness and using the breath as a tool for calm when in distress.
• Adaptability: Techniques are tailored to the clients present.
• Examples include: Diaphragmatic Breathing (Belly Breathing), Conscious Continual
Flow (for centered focus), and Sound Breathing (using silent vibration to regulate the
vagus nerve).
2. Sensory Regulation & Essential Oils Lab
Building on the success of the wellness lab delivered previously at Gateway HQ, this session
explores the connection between scent and emotion.
• Activity: Emotional mapping—identifying what emotions different scents evoke.
• Tangible Takeaway: Participants create a personalized “Mind Calm Roller” using high-
quality, natural, hypoallergenic plant essences (essential oils).
3. Body Mapping & Stress Awareness
This guided segment uses light movement designed for all bodies (inclusive of wheelchair users
and those with visual or physical impairments) to build somatic awareness.
• Activity: Participants use a simple body-outline sketch to visually map where stress
shows up for them personally, followed by a guided body scan for deeper emotional
regulation awareness.
4. Gentle Movement & Seated Yoga
Accessible movement designed for the workplace environment.
• Focus: Chair-based options, micro-break exercises, and 5-minute reset techniques to
manage energy during the workday.
5. Closing Circle & Integration
A crucial component for solidifying learning. We discuss practical application: “What will you use this week?” and create a follow-up plan.
