Success Story: Ava

At 20 years old, Ava set a personal goal for herself: to find meaningful employment and gain greater independence. While she had some previous experience through paid placements and practicums in customer service and childcare, she was still looking for her first long-term position. Ava also navigates barriers including ADD, cognitive delay, low comprehension, and social anxiety — challenges that can make entering the workforce feel intimidating.

In February 2025, Ava enrolled in Gateway’s GET-Work project and began actively working toward her employment goals. From the beginning, Ava showed determination and a willingness to step outside of her comfort zone. She worked hard on building her resume, practicing interview skills, and preparing for job opportunities.

Interviews were initially one of the biggest hurdles for Ava due to her anxiety. Through practice and coaching, she continued to push herself, gaining confidence each time she tried. Reflecting on her progress, Ava shared that “Gateway really helped me come out of my shell and be more confident.” Her perseverance and openness to learning played a big role in her growth.

In August 2025, Ava applied for an Environment Team Member position with Michaels. During the interview process, Ava was able to demonstrate her thoughtfulness, kindness, and enthusiasm — qualities that resonated with the hiring team. Shortly after the interview, she received a job offer.

Since starting her role, Ava has continued to build her confidence and workplace skills. She embraced learning new tasks during orientation and has shown a strong commitment to doing her best each day. Her supervisors have shared positive feedback and appreciate the care and effort she brings to her work.

Because Ava values creativity, self-expression, kindness, and friendship, Michaels has proven to be a wonderful fit. Her journey is a great example of how determination, courage, and the right opportunities can help someone grow beyond what they once thought possible.

Way to go, Ava!
