Mary Etem Mbiatem

Mary is a first-generation immigrant from Cameroon residing on Treaty 6 territory and a doctoral candidate in Counselling Psychology at the University of Alberta. With an interdisciplinary background in nursing, public health, and mental health, her work focuses on trauma (PTSD and gender-based violence), psychosocial adaptation, and culturally informed practice.

Her doctoral research explores the “third space” in cultural brokering; how brokers create a middle ground that supports immigrant families involved with Child Intervention in navigating systems and bridging cultural perspectives. Grounded in trauma-informed, culturally responsive practice and a strong equity lens, her work reflects a commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and relational care for diverse communities.

Mary also provides clinical supervision, consultation, and training for service providers working with immigrant and refugee populations, and supports individuals experiencing complex trauma, including first responders, in her private practice. She brings a practical, systems-aware perspective on how culturally responsive approaches and cross-sector collaboration can strengthen equitable pathways to employment.
