MentorAbility Match: Megan and Bean

Mentee Megan has spent most of her working life behind the scenes doing data and administrative work and has been wanting to make a change. She wants to be in a people-facing role, where she can see the difference that she’s making and have the opportunity to interact with others. One of the areas that she is interested in learning more about is physical therapy.

When approached by MentorAbility to become a mentor, Bean Gill, the Cofounder & Executive Director at ReYu Paralysis Recovery Centre, was eagerly ALL IN! As well as her work at ReYu, Bean is part of the cast of CBC Gem show Push and a passionate speaker on disability inclusion and leadership in growth and change.

Bean loves the opportunity that MentorAbility offers to folks for career investigation and spoke to Megan for several hours about the activity-based therapy work that happens at ReYu, from the theory to the practical, and allowed Megan to observe multiple different therapy sessions.

Megan came away with so much to think about and a great respect for the work that Bean and her team do, in awe of the fact that clients come from all around the world to seek ReYu’s services and the impact that the work they do has on their clients.

Megan and Bean’s conversation also delved into the more personal, from why they get into the work that they do, using the desire to be of service to others to build up your own confidence and skills so that you can in turn help build the confidence and skills of the clients.

As Bean said, “confidence means to trust within yourself. Know who you are, recognize it, respect it, and own it.” Without having that in oneself, one cannot provide it to others. Thanks to this mentorship experience, Megan is one step closer to finding her own confidence in her new career!
