Ava’s First Long-Term Job

In August 2025, Ava walked into an interview at Michaels, the part of the job search that used to scare her most, and showed the hiring team her thoughtfulness, kindness, and enthusiasm. Shortly after, they offered her the job.

Ava had set the goal herself at 20: a meaningful, long-term job and more independence to go with it. She already had some customer service and childcare experience through paid placements and practicums, but the first lasting position was still ahead of her. In February 2025 she enrolled in Gateway’s GET-Work project and got to work, building her resume, practising interviews, and preparing for opportunities, willing from the start to step outside her comfort zone.

Interviews were the hardest part. Through practice and coaching she kept pushing herself, and got steadier each time.

Now she’s an Environment Team Member at Michaels. She took to the new tasks during orientation and brings care and effort to every shift, and her supervisors have noticed, sharing positive feedback about the work she does. Michaels turned out to be a strong fit for someone who values creativity, self-expression, kindness, and friendship.
